How to Make -Homemade White Bread:


Wow. I love homemade White Bread, freshly cooked bread. The smell as the bread is cooking just warms the heart and tickles the taste buds. Eating it warm just intensifies the flavour.

Delicious on its own or with your favourite topping and having the fresh home-cooked bread to accompany homemade soup is a perfect match.

Summary of the Steps Involved


500g strong white flour

Pinch of salt

25g butter

1 packet of fast-action dried yeast

300ml warm water

Olive oil

Sieve 500g strong white flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl (don’t forget the salt, it doesn’t taste the same without it)

Chop up into little pieces some cold butter and then add to the flour

Rub the butter and flour together with your finger tips or in a food processor

Empty the contents of fast action dried yeast into a jug and add to it 300ml warm water and give it a stir.

To get the correct warm temperature try 2 parts boiling water and 1 ½ parts cold water to get the correct temperature. (If it is not a fast action dried yeast then follow the instructions on the packet)

Pour yeast mixture into bowl of flour mixture

Mix around with a spoon until it starts to come together then get your hands in there and finish binding it to a dough

Sprinkle some flour onto your work surface area

Place the dough onto the floured work surface area and knead for 10 minutes

Put 1 tbsp of olive oil in a large bowl and spread the oil around the inside of the bowl with your fingers

Place the dough into the bowl

Lightly oil some cling-film and put it over the top of the bowl

Wet a tea-towel and squeeze out excess water so the tea-towel is damp and place it over the cling film on the bowl

Place the bowl in a warm area and leave for 2 hours for bread dough to rise

After the 2 hours remove the tea-towel and cling-film and you will see the dough has risen and may have doubled in size

Knock out the dough – which means give the dough a punch in the middle and you will see it deflate

Remove dough from the bowl and put on a floured surface and knead for 2 minutes

Flatten the dough out to the length of the loaf tin then roll the dough to make a bread shape

Lightly oil a loaf tin

Place the dough with the underside of it at the bottom of the tin so the smooth bit of dough is on show

You can make a couple of marks along the top of dough (optional) so it will have a couple of splits at the top as it cooks

Lightly oil some cling-film and put it over the top of the loaf tin

Put the damp tea-towel on the cling-film over the loaf tin

Leave in a warm place for an hour so it can rise

When the hour is up bake in a pre-heated oven for 30-35 minutes at gas mark 8/230°C

You know it is ready as it will sound hollow if you tap in the centre of the underneath of the bread
