Apple Crumble Recipe:

Apple Crumble is a classic simple dessert to make and yet extremely tasty.

Of course you can vary the apple crumble up a bit by adding some pears with the apple.

The topping for the apple crumble can be with or without oats and if you wanted to try adding a few nuts like almonds that would change it up a bit.

Or another idea for your apple crumble topping is to put in a few coconut flakes.

Although keeping you apple crumble simple and traditional is amazingly tasty.

Personally I cook whatever way I am in the mood for that day. Sometimes I love the basic apple crumble and other times I add the oats and coconut and pears.

To go with my delicious apple crumble I love pouring on warm custard and other times I love vanilla or homemade caramel icecream.

Ingredients

  • Crumble Filling

    5 – 6 apples

    60g (1/3 cup) brown sugar

    ¼ – ½ litre of water

  • Crumble Topping

    100g (1 cup) plain flour

    50g (4 tbsp) butter

    60g (1/3 cup) brown sugar

    20g (2 tbsp) caster sugar

    50g (3/4 cup) oats

    1 tsp vanilla extract

Apple Crumble – Method & Instructions

Pre-heat the oven to Gas 5/190°C/375°F

Cut apples into quarters

Peel the skin of the apples if you want. It is ok if you want to leave them on.

Take out the core and pips of the apples.

Slice the apple into thin slices and place into a pot of boiling water.

If you are making a large apple crumble by doubling the ingredients you may decide to put your apple slices into cold water and squeeze some lemon into the water and this will stop the apples going brown from the air, until you are ready to put them in your pot of boiling water.

Add the 50-60g brown sugar to the water and apple slices and boil for 10 minutes.

Cook the apple for 5 minutes with the lid on and then 5 minutes with the lid off. Cooking the apples in the brown sugar gives the apples a beautiful golden colour.

Drain the excess water from the apples in a sieve but keep a small bit ( 2 tbsp) of the juice.

Place the cooked apples and small bit of juice in a pirex dish/oven proof dish

Now to make the Topping for your Apple Crumble

Into a food processor put the flour and butter and give it a quick blast. If you don’t have a food processor then you can rub the butter and flour together with your finger tips. Making sure your hands and the butter are cold.

Then add the brown and caster sugar to the flour and butter crumbly mixture and give it another quick wiz in the food processor.

Add the vanilla extract and cinnamon if you wanted to.

You can leave the crumble mixture as it is or you can add porridge oats. As another option you can add a few crushed almond or coconut flakes.

Put the crumble mixture in the oven and bake 20 – 25 minutes.

Serve and enjoy with custard or icecream

Happy Cooking
